In Memoriam

Ben Gazzara (1930–2012)

Ben Gazzara

Ben Gazzara was a very intense actor who worked with several Hollywood directors, among whom John Cassavetes.  His collaborations with the latter are what I remember him most for.  Their movies often had a very experimental feel to them, and the acting was quite theatrical, but Gazzara’s craft was undeniable.  He was often paired with Gena Rowlands, Cassavetes’ wife, and that’s how I most remember him.

According to IMDb, his career started in television in 1952 and he never really left that medium, even winning an Emmy in 2003 for Hysterical Blindness. In all, he appeared in 133 films between theater and television.  Quite the career.
