Bridegroom

The Gist: Shane and Tom are in love. A fatal accident puts an end to their relationship and it's only then that Shane realizes how few rights he has in the face of the law when Tom's family refuses to let him attend the funeral.

Bridegroom is a well made documentary about a love story that will inevitably break your heart. Unfortunately, stories like these are all too real because of homophobia and the rejection that gays and lesbians might face from their partners' families if they have not taken legal steps to legitimize their relationships.

Fortunately, thanks to the Supreme Court's 2013 ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide, LGBT people can now get married and safeguard their rights and their access to their loved ones, but absent a marriage certificate I'm sure stories like these are still the order of the day.

The Bottom Line: Whether you're gay or straight, this film deserves to be watched. It shines a sorely needed light on the all too easy obstructionism gay people face in a society that still refuses to fully accept them as equal citizens.
