Reality Bites

The Gist: Four friends have just graduated from college and are now faced with the realities of adult life. However, the need to have steady jobs to pay for their necessities and start a career conflicts with the carelessness of youth, the refusal of being part of the system, like their parents, and the resistance to taking on responsibilities. Love, between two of them and also outsiders, complicates things further.

Directed by Ben Stiller, who also stars alongside Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Steve Zahn, Reality Bites has become a classic among coming-of-age flicks.

Personally, I only marginally liked it as I found it to be a bit oversimplified in its treatment of young-adult life, but I think my judgment is influenced by my coming from a whole different country and culture, in which those depictions are purely fictional.

The Bottom Line: Overall, the movie is funny, touching, and sweet, and the characters are likable, so given its cult status, perhaps it deserves to be checked out.
