Ok, I so totally have to link to this post by Michael from AMERICAblog about bottled water.

The last paragraph made my jaw drop:
Imagine: at every pump and spigot around the world that we sponsored, a small discrete plaque saying "Courtesy of the United States of America."
Imagine the good name the US would have in the world if something like that had been done (millions and millions of people dying of thirst, of all races and religions, grateful to the US for literally saving their lives.) The goodwill towards us would be neverending. The US' image would be unassailable in the public opinion. Anyone trying to hurt the US or its interests would have the whole world against.

Now compare that mental picture with the US' standing in the world today: our allies are so few we need to bribe some countries in order to get them on our side. Meanwhile, the list of our enemies grows daily, and we're not just talking about opposing political views, we're talking about breeding grounds for terrorists willing and able to wreak havoc and destruction on US citizens and US' possessions.

Just imagine how much good Bush could have done with all the money he has thrown and is throwing in Iraq, either in the world or even just in this country (it's not like there aren't hunger stricken people in this country, but helping people in foreign countries would have bettered our image abroad and helped our cause in a post 9/11 world,) instead, he just went to war.

With a lie.

After I read that, I starting thinking of all the thinks we could have done with $300 billion.

• Vaccinate every child in the world

• Build a home for homeless people across the country

• Design and perfect non-gasoline technology for automobiles

• Subsidize fruits and vegetables, so the poor among us can afford healthy food

• Build enough schools to reduce class-size to under 15 - 18

I could go on an on, but even burning the cash to keep warm would be a better use that what it's going towards now.
