Madonna’s extravaganza

Last night Madonna entertained the millions who were watching the Super Bowl at halftime.  Here’s the entire spectacle:

I think she did a great job, although this is the first halftime show I ever watched, so I don’t really have a benchmark to compare it against.

The choreography was very good, the set of songs (Vogue, Music, – Party Rock Anthem/Sexy And I Know It –, Give Me All Your Luvin’, Open Your Heart/Express Yourself/Like a Prayer) was well chosen among her catalog, and the delivery was good.  As far as I could tell, she sang live, sticking it to Elton John, whose bitchy advice for her was to “make sure she lip-synched well.”

The only thing I didn’t like is her new single, Give Me All Your Luvin’, which just sounds too bland and empty for the Queen of Pop.  I would expect a song like that to be coming from any of the teen pop sensations that change with the seasons, not from Madonna, especially after all the time that has passed since her last studio album.

Hopefully, this single was tailored to the Super Bowl halftime show, which demanded levity, and the rest of the album, produced by the same guy with whom she made the great Ray of Light, William Orbit, will be extraordinary enough to make us all forget about this silly, tinny tune.
