Light of the Seven

The last episode of season 6 of Game of Thrones was a spectacular success thanks to shocking plot developments, great acting, and fantastic action pieces.

There is another piece that made it so successful though, its soundtrack. Composer Ramin Djawadi had already created one of the best opening titles scores ever, had concocted countless thematic tracks for the different characters in the show, and with Light of the Seven has now created one of the most haunting and unforgettable tracks of any TV show or movie.

10 Cloverfield Lane

The Gist: A woman wakes up in a strange place that is revealed to be a bunker. The man who owns it tells her she cannot leave because some kind of explosion made the outside air unsafe and that everyone out there is likely dead or dying. She's skeptical, but another man in the bunker tells her he actually witnessed the attack.

Back in 2008, J.J. Abrams came up with Cloverfield. It was very cleverly marketed, teasing the audience without revealing much at all. The tactic worked and the movie was fairly successful financially, but it hardly lived up to expectations.

10 Cloverfield Lane, produced once again by the famously secretive Abrams, was concealed so effectively, no one had any idea he was even producing a sequel at all! Its release was a complete surprise given the full absence of marketing.

Fortunately, the follow up is a decisive improvement. The script is streamlined and clever and the action is well balanced with periods of inaction that build on the plot's basic idea of the unknown and the insecurities it engenders.

John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. all do an excellent job.

The Bottom Line: Whether you liked the original or not, rest assured that you will enjoy the sequel. I am actually hoping more chapters are in the pipeline.

Togetherness

While season 1's finale was interesting enough to make me come back for season 2, overall Togetherness felt a bit weak, especially after the customary passage of time in between seasons.

Well, I'm happy to report that the second helping is definitely a step up. The characters feel more rounded and the stories are more engaging.

Unfortunately, just as it was starting to find its footing, I just found out that the show has officially been canceled by HBO, further cementing my ambivalence about getting hooked by TV shows.

So season 2's finale, which was very nice, served as series finale as well, and marked the end of a show that could have been more.

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill

The Gist: Long after the peak of her career, famed singer Billie Holiday performs many of her hits for a small crowd of admirers, while slowly unraveling.

I had no idea who Audra McDonald even was and now she's one of my favorite actresses. She carries this whole movie on her own and so deeply inhabits the persona of Billie Holiday, she makes you absolutely believe you're watching the real one.

The Bottom Line: Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill is a must see. The songs are beautiful and the direction streamlined, but it's Ms McDonald's performance that will leave you spellbound.

Grade: 8

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson

This was the first season of Ryan Murphy's latest creation and I decided to watch it because after hearing lots of stories about the so-called "trial of the century" I wanted to see if I could gain a better understanding about it.

I know what you're all saying, this is a TV show, so probably not the most objective source of information out there, but I just wanted to know more about it, not write a thesis on it!

Furthermore, the cast corralled by Mr. Murphy, once again, was impressive: John Travolta, Cuba Gooding Jr., Bruce Greenwood, Nathan Lane, Sterling K. Brown, David Schwimmer, and Courtney B. Vance are all fantastic, but Sarah Paulson's performance represents a towering achievement.

She better get some love come awards time, is all I'm saying.

While it's hard to fully believe in Simpson's innocence, when one looks at the evidence, it's incredible to see how much influence the media had on the court of public opinion, how masterfully Simpson's legal team manipulated the media (especially Robert Shapiro and Johnnie Cochran), how tragically Marcia Clark's reputation was smeared, how many people sought to gain financially from the tragic and gruesome death of the victims, and how circus-like the whole thing got.

The whole police vs. blacks narrative also looks very different when viewed through the lens of the recent incidents that led to the birth of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

The show is well written, very well acted, and well directed. Whatever opinion one might have about Simpson's innocence or guilt, it's a very good miniseries.

Game of Thrones

Season 6 of Game of Thrones was arguably one of its richest to date and the season finale left me speechless.

Naturally, there are spoilers ahead...

After leaving us wondering for a whole year whether Jon Snow was dead or alive, following the seemingly fatal multiple stabbings at the end of season 5, he was finally resurrected by the mysterious Melisandre, who is apparently very old and has now been banished.

The Lannisters lost another king (and queen), but that didn't stop Cersei from solidifying her power over King's Landing. The Starks also lost another family member, and they also retook the north. Three other families, meanwhile, the Boltons, the Martells, and Freys, weren't as lucky and were pretty much eradicated from Westeros.

Daenerys regained control of her dragons and reasserted her power over Meereen and the former Slavers Bay. She closed the season by sailing to Westeros to retake the Iron Throne with the support of House Tyrell of Highgarden, the Sands of Dorne, and the younger Greyjoys of the Iron Islands.

Bran Stark is coming into his own as the Three Eyed Raven, while Arya Stark, whose storyline I find extremely uninteresting, has given up on shedding her persona in order to become "no one" and has instead returned to Westeros.

It seems clear that Bran, Arya, and good old Sam Tarly all have bigger roles to play in the final episodes of the series (there should be only 13, split in 2 seasons), but so far we've only seen them sporadically.

Overall, Game of Thrones keeps getting better and better, as demonstrated by its growing fan base, and it will be sad indeed when we have to finally say goodbye to it. But for now, it's the undisputed pinnacle of excellency as far as television productions go.

Grade - Season 6: 10
