The Gist: Long after the peak of her career, famed singer Billie Holiday performs many of her hits for a small crowd of admirers, while slowly unraveling.
I had no idea who Audra McDonald ever was and now she's one of my favorite actresses. She carries this whole movie on her own and so deeply inhabits the persona of Billie Holiday, she makes you absolutely believe you're watching the real one.
The Bottom Line: Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill is a must see. The songs are beautiful and the direction streamlined, but it's Ms McDonald's performance that will leave you spellbound.
