President Bush on Thursday accepted the withdrawal of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, according to a statement from the White House. Now the "conspiracy theory" that her nomination was only a smokescreen comes back to haunt me. Is it possible Bush nominated a crony just so that nobody would like her, he'd have to nominate someone else, and so he'd be able to pick a staunch conservative (which is what he wanted all along) by using the excuse that at least someone will like that nominee, while no one liked this one?
In her letter to the president, Miers said she was "concerned that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and its staff and it is not in the best interest of the country."
We'll see.
