Another very interesting article from Yahoo! news. Some good news some bad. Unfortunately the California Supreme Court declined to take immediate review of the freedom-to-marry cases now pending before a state appellate court. Why, is beyond me, since it looks to me like this is one of those cases where cloture would be welcomed, by all parties involved.

The worst part is that this decision adds at least a year to the current litigation:
By this timetable, one would not expect the question of marriage equality to reach the California Supreme Court until late next year. Add another year of briefing, arguments and deliberation to that, and the Golden State's same-sex couples will probably remain in limbo until late 2007 or early 2008.
However, I didn't know that in Washington state we're just waiting for a decision, which could come any day now (although, don't hold your breath, people were saying the same thing about the Massachusetts' decision, and months went by):
In Washington, by contrast, the state Supreme Court did accept direct review of two marriage cases last year. Oral arguments were held last March in that suit, and a decision that could, in theory, make Washington the second state in the nation to equalize marriage laws could be handed down tomorrow, or months from now.
Let's just hope Mark Leno's bill passes the Legislature, or at the very least, that the Jesus-freaks' proposed amendments to the Constitution either fail to reach the quota or fail to pass at the polls.
