American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

The second season of Ryan Murphy's American Crime Story centers around the infamous assassination of renowned fashion designer Gianni Versace.

Versace was murdered point-blank by a serial killer, Andrew Cunanan, on the front steps of his Miami mansion, in plain daylight.

The news spread around the world like wildfire because everybody knew the name Versace, whether they could afford his clothes or not.

However, the fact that he (like the previous victims) was gay meant that the police gave little attention to the murder at first, allowing Cunanan to keep moving around undetected until the outcry became too loud even for the police to withstand.

Eventually, Cunanan killed himself when he realized his time as a free man had come to an end.

The show does a good job of showing what Versace's life must have really looked like, but focuses primarily on Cunanan and his upbringing and development into adulthood, all in the service of trying to understand his motives and what drove him to such maddening acts.

It's not always easy to watch, especially when it's clear that yet another unsuspecting victim is about to meet his or her doom, but it's really good. Darren Criss particularly, is excellent.

Grade - Season 2: 9
