The Deuce

An HBO show about New York City's '70s and '80s heyday, when porn, prostitution, law enforcement, politics, corruption, and gangsters were rampant, sounded interesting from the get-go.

Add to it that the series is the brainchild of David Simon (he of The Wire and Treme) and stars James Franco (in dual twin-brothers roles) and Maggie Gyllenhaal and I had to check it out.

I wasn't disappointed. The show is gritty and certainly not shy about showing what the era must have been like, warts and all.

Franco, as usual, does an excellent job in wildly different roles, and Gyllenhaal is plainly fantastic in the role of a prostitute who fights for her independence and aspires to something more.

But those are just three of the couple dozen fascinating, alluring, and magnetic characters (and performances) that populate this gorgeous, gargantuan tableau.

Grade - Season 1: 9
