Harriet

THE GIST: After successfully escaping from slavery, Harriet Tubman finds her calling in helping other slaves gain their freedom through the Underground Railroad, even if it means putting herself and her newfound safety at risk.

Harriet is based on true accounts of Tubman's extraordinary courage and determination in helping as many slaves as possible gain freedom. She often put her safety at risk and dared to face dangers that no one else would.

At its heart, the movie is a rousing tale of the perennial fight of good versus evil and of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity and injustice.

Cynthia Erivo, as always, delivers a stirring performance in the lead role, joined by Joe Alwyn, Clarke Peters, Leslie Odom Jr., Vanessa Bell Calloway, Zackary Momoh, and Janelle MonĂ¡e.

THE BOTTOM LINE: This film tells a story deserving to be known. It certainly isn't perfect and might take some dramatic liberties for the sake of storytelling, but it's a solid product.
