Brooklyn

The Gist: A young Irish woman immigrates to America in the post-war years, hoping for a brighter future. She soon falls for an Italian-American who seems crazy for her too. When things take a turn for the worse back home, she feels inexorably torn between her past and her future.

Such a heartwarming love story, told with subtlety and kindness, Brooklyn is the last of 2016's Best Picture Oscar nominees I still had to watch.

Saoirse Ronan, nominated for a Best Leading Actress Oscar, displays gentleness and strength in a role that sees her go from the deepest sadness to the highest happiness. You'll be rooting for her all the way.

Her love interest is played by Emory Cohen with such intensity you can't but hope he gets the girl in the end.

Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, and Julie Waters round up the impressive cast.

The Bottom Line: If you like love stories then make sure you don't let this one pass you by. It's very well written and Ronan is a revelation.
