Thelma

THE GIST
: Against her parents' wishes, Thelma enrolls at a university in Oslo. Shy and inexperienced, she feels pretty alone, until she meets Anja and they become friends. When the friendship develops into something more romantic, Thelma is scared of what she's feeling, which her religious views tell her is wrong. Trying to repress her emotions, a yet undiscovered psychokinetic ability develops in her, one she cannot fully control, together with memories of some dark family secrets.

Thelma is a well-thought out fantasy/drama that just happens to have a lesbian romance at its center, which is handled with total nonchalance.

Eili Harboe and Kaya Wilkins are both wonderful in their roles.

THE BOTTOM LINE: A nice story about a simple girl who turns out to be much more powerful than she ever imagined.

Grade: 7.5
