The Gist: Trevor Reznik works as a machinist and hasn't slept in a year. The insomnia has led to extreme weight loss and mental instability, with increasingly frequent hallucinations. He starts seeing people who don't exist, believes there's a conspiracy against him, and causes a brutal accident at work. Eventually, his attempts to figure out what's really going on will lead him to a startling discovery.The Machinist is a rather intriguing movie that plays with the concept of guilt and redemption. Christian Bale is mesmerizing in a role for which he probably underwent his most extreme (and likely dangerous) physical transformation to date.
The Bottom Line: The Machinist is a well made psychological thriller that keeps you guessing at what's going on and what's going to happen to Trevor. Definitely recommended.
