Hacksaw Ridge

THE GIST: Desmond T. Doss feels like it's his duty to serve his country during World War II, so he volunteers in the Army, but his strict moral code and religious views prevent him from carrying a weapon or killing another human. Eventually allowed to serve as a medic, he goes on to save the lives of many wounded soldiers, ultimately becoming the first conscientious objector to earn the Medal of Honor.

Hacksaw Ridge is based on true events which only adds to its dramatic cachet.

Directed by Mel Gibson, who was nominated for a Best Director Oscar, it stars the handsome Andrew Garfield, himself nominated for a Best Lead Actor Oscar, Hugo Weaving, and Rachel Griffiths.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you like war movies, this one should be on your list. Huge battles scenes are besides the point here, because this one man's heroism and dedication are really the focus.
