Manchester by the Sea

THE GIST: Lee Chandler is a sullen and jaded repairman who gets called back to his hometown after the sudden death of his brother. Once there, he finds out he's been named as his teenage nephew's guardian, a role for which he feels utterly unequipped. Justifiably, his nephew doesn't want to have to uproot his life, the alternative being his uncle moving back to Manchester-by-the-Sea, a place he left in disgrace after an unspeakable tragedy that still haunts him.

Manchester by the Sea tells a fairly heartwrenching tale but it's a great drama, one that often feels like it's bathed in inconsolable sadness.

Best Lead Actor Oscar winner Casey Affleck serves up a fantastic performance, withheld and explosive in equal parts. He's flanked by the equally excellent Michelle Williams and Lucas Hedges, both nominated for Oscars in supporting roles.

THE BOTTOM LINE: A touching and gloomy drama that will stay with you for a spell.
