The Reader

THE GIST
: Hanna first meets a teenage Michael in post-WWII Germany when she helps him get home after he falls ill. In spite of their age difference, a passionate but secret love affair ensues. Part of their love making ritual includes Michael reading books aloud to Hanna. When she suddenly disappears, Michael is confused and heartbroken. Years later, now a law student, Michael see Hanna again. She's now on trial for Nazi war crimes.

The Reader is an absolute cinematic gem.

The love story at its core is sweet, intriguing, and heartwarming; the secret that Hanna keeps in spite of its repercussions is heartbreaking, in spite of her actions as an SS guard; and you feel for Michael's struggle with his dilemma about what to do.

Kate Winslet won a Best Lead Actress Oscar for her performance and she's stunning, as are the always great Ralph Fiennes and David Kross, who plays younger Michael.

The film was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Cinematography as well.

THE BOTTOM LINE: A must-see for all cinema lovers and definitely recommended to all.
