mid90s

THE GIST
: Thirteen-year-old Stevie doesn't get along with his abusive older brother and is barely a blip in her young, single mother's life. Things at school are hardly better, so he's immediately drawn to a group of good-for-nothing kids he sees hanging out at a skateboard shop. Once they let him in, he starts learning their ways, which include daredevil behaviors and anti-social attitudes, which all end up influencing Stevie's growth.

mid90s was written and directed by Jonah Hill, so one can assume a certain amount of biographical material went into it.

The lead role is played by a very promising young actor, Sunny Suljic, flanked by the great Lucas Hedges and Katherine Waterston.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The rather intimate portrait of this young kid can feel interesting in the moment, but is soon forgotten.

Grade: 6.5
