The Front Runner

THE GIST
: In 1987, well known and liked U.S. Senator Gary Hart is considered the front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. His confidence in not having anything to hide leads him to invite the press to follow him around even when not campaigning, against his campaign manager's advice. The choice will prove a fatal mistake when compromising pictures of him and a female journalist are published, ending the tradition of turning a blind eye to a politicians' improprieties and generating rumors of infidelity that will lead him to drop out of the race.

The Front Runner is a well-executed political movie that shows how a powerful individual can be brought down by his or her own hubris.

I had never heard of Gary Hart before, but the particular politician isn't really the point here, as the themes analyzed, which include transparency, journalism, ethics, and morality, are practically timeless.

Sure is a pity, as Mr. Hart did seem like a good politician, in the public sphere at least.

Hugh Jackman gives a very powerful performance, flanked by Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, Chris Coy, Kaitlyn Dever, Alfred Molina, and Sara Paxton.

THE BOTTOM LINE: An excellent politically theme drama with powerful performances. Definitely recommended.

Grade: 7.5
