The Young Victoria

THE GIST: Young Princess Victoria is forced to live by her mother's and her consort's unyielding rules until she ascends the British throne at age 18, against their wishes. Once monarch, she has to quickly learn to navigate the treacherous waters of political intrigue and machinations, with everyone trying to control her and steer her decision-making. Eventually, she marries Prince Albert, who becomes the love of her life and a reliable partner in governing her subjects.

The Young Victoria is a very finely made historical drama with exquisite costumes and wonderful production design.

The lovely Emily Blunt plays Victoria with gusto, leading a top-notch cast that includes Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Mark Strong, and Michiel Huisman.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Fun to watch if you're into period dramas. Blunt is delightful.
