Suspiria

THE GIST
: American dancer Suzy Bannion is accepted at the prestigious Tanz dance academy, in Germany. Her arrival coincides with the tragic death of another student, followed by odd sounds, spells of illness, and other accidents. Eventually, Suzy finds out that the school used to be a coven, and perhaps some witches are still around.

Famed Italian filmmaker Dario Argento wrote and directed Suspiria, imprinting it with his trademark scares and blood curdling imagery. In time, this has become a classic.

Jessica Harper stars as the young ingenue and the cast includes Stefania Casini, Miguel Bosé, Udo Kier, Joan Bennett, and the great Alida Valli.

THE BOTTOM LINE: While some of the visual effects and props might feel dated, the movie still manages to deliver on the scare factor.
