Arrival

THE GIST: Linguist expert Louise Banks and theoretical physicist Ian Donnelly are recruited by the US military to help investigate the sudden arrival of 12 alien vessels at random places around the world. Banks's expertise in deciphering the alien language is key to establish communication and determine whether the aliens have good or bad intentions. Unfortunately, it's a race against time, since the militaries of each country visited by a spaceship are under increasing pressure to strike first.

Arrival is a sci-fi/thriller with a pretty interesting mystery at its core. The script expertly layers the suspense until the final reveal.

Very nice turns by Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma.

THE BOTTOM LINE: As sci-fi stories go, Arrival is a pretty good one, and it's made really well. Very good acting always helps.
