Captain Fantastic

THE GIST: Ben and Leslie, at odds with the Western world's capitalism ideals, long ago left society behind and live largely off the grid with their six children, whom they've raised to be survivalists and self-sufficient. When Leslie, suffering from depression, kills herself, Ben has to face her father's anger at him and the life they chose for his grandchildren. In an effort to grant Leslie's final wishes, the family embarks on a perilous voyage.

Captain Fantastic is a drama with some very uplifting ideals that often clash with what us, as an audience living according to the norms this family abhors, usually feel or believe.

The magnificent Viggo Mortensen leads a great cast that includes George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton, Frank Langella, and Ann Dowd.

THE BOTTOM LINE: A well-made family movie with some unconventional messages that nonetheless add to the overall experience.
