Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea)

THE GIST: Located in the Mediterranean sea, the small Italian island of Lampedusa has become the main gateway for thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants on their way to Europe, where their hopes for a better future lie. These desperate people sometimes spend their life savings to purchase spots on ramshackle boats sent on a very perilous trip. Some perish; many more are turned back; but the few who make it through keep the dream alive for a multitude of others. And what of the longtime inhabitants of the island themselves?

Fuocoammare is methodical and almost melancholy in its examination, analysis, and reporting on the trials and tribulations of both the migrants and the citizens whose land has been swarmed by many thousands of desperate souls through the years.

It was nominated for a Best Documentary Feature Oscar.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Interesting to watch, but I doubt it'll leave a memorable mark.

Grade: 7
