THE GIST: The Enterprise is in the remote reaches of Federation space when a swarm of alien attackers overwhelm and destroy the ship, stranding the crew on an unknown planet. The attack was led by Krall, who hates the Federation and seeks a bioweapon called the Abronath, currently safeguarded by Captain Kirk.
Star Trek Beyond is the third chapter in the Kelvin Timeline of the Star Trek franchise (after Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness) and while it isn't as great as its two predecessors, it's still a fun ride with this group of heroes fighting to keep darkness at bay.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and Simon Pegg are all back, as well as Anton Yelchin, who unfortunately died in a freak accident shortly before the film's premiere.
Idris Elba is practically unrecognizable in the baddie makeup, but he is scary good. Sofia Boutella plays a new character that I hope we'll get to see more of in the future.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Great visual effects, an original story, lots of action, good direction, and characters we've come to know and love, what's not to like?
