Toni Erdmann

THE GIST: Divorced piano teacher and practical-jokester Winfried decides to pay a visit to his estranged daughter Ines, a jaded business consultant who pours all her time and efforts into her career, in the hopes of rekindling their relationship. When it looks like things might not work out, Winfried decides to adopt a new persona, that of flamboyant, outspoken, and extravagant Toni Erdmann. Surprisingly, the move isn't totally rejected by Ines.

Toni Erdmann was deservedly nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. From the poster, I didn't really know what to expect, but came away refreshed by it's originality and optimism.

Great performances by Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek help seal the deal.

THE BOTTOM LINE: To those who say, They don't make good movies anymore, watch this and rejoice! And yes, it's subtitled, so what? You can read right? Then get over yourself! This movie is great!
