Elle

THE GIST: Michèle is a successful businesswoman who exerts complete control over every aspect of her life. One night, an intruder assaults and rapes her in her own home. She reacts coolly to it; then proceeds to systematically track down her assailant. At that point, a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse begins; a game that could have nefarious consequences.

Elle presents us with the portrait of a woman who is in full control of her life, and when someone tries to stump all over it, she turns the tables on him. This is a strong woman who will not be subjugated.

Isabelle Huppert turns in a magnificent performance that earned her a Best Lead Actress Oscar nomination. She did win a Golden Globe for it, and so did the movie for Best Foreign Language film.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The act at the center of this movie is obviously very tough to watch, but this is a movie about female empowerment on steroids, and Huppert is simply great to watch.
