Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

THE GIST: Young orphan Harry Potter lives with relatives who treat him miserably, until he's summoned to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Apparently, both his parents belonged to the institution and he's quite renown himself. There, he meets two best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and professor Dumbledore, who will be a lifelong mentor. He also learns about the dark side of magic and the one powerful wizard responsible for his parents' deaths: Voldemort.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the first installment in the long running and very successful Potter franchise, based on J.K. Rowling's books. It's overall a charming and quite entertaining movie, and a good introduction to the characters of this magical world.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson star as the three close friends. Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Fiona Shaw, Richard Griffiths, Warwick Davis, John Hurt, Julie Walters, John Cleese, and Alan Rickman are just some of the big names starring in the franchise.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you've read the book (which I haven't) you will probably like this movie. From what I heard, it's a worthy adaptation, and from what I've seen, it is quite a bit of fun.
