Transformers: Age of Extinction is the third sequel in the franchise and the first one not headlined by Shia LaBeouf. Personally, I found the casting of Mark Wahlberg worked, because his action star credentials are well established, he’s a decent actor, and he’s capable of doing comedy as well.
The overhauled cast, which includes Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Titus Welliver, and T.J. Miller, also brings a welcome breath of fresh air, even though one wonders how the Autobots, and Bumblebee in particular, have discarded their deep interpersonal history with Sam Witwicky.
THE BOTTOM LINE: If you’re wondering whether to watch this movie, I have to assume you’ve watched the others. If that’s the case, you’ll find more of the same here, which is the reason my grade dropped some: the storytelling is becoming a bit strained with each passing title.
Grade: 6
