THE GIST: The secretive Monarch organization is interested in exploring the recently discovered Skull Island, perpetually enshrined in a storm system that has kept it hidden from the world until now. The expedition is escorted by a military unit, but their weapons will prove no match for the incredible creatures they encounter, chief amongst them the mighty ape King Kong.This new take on the Kong character introduces us to the Monarch organization, which shows up in the more recent Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and clearly the intention is to create a whole series of mythological movies about these fantastical creatures.
So far so good, because Kong: Skull Island is well thought out and executed and the big ape has never looked more alive.
The movie benefits from a stellar cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and John Goodman.
THE BOTTOM LINE: If you like monster movies, get your popcorn ready, sit back and enjoy a couple hours of great fun.
