Ricki and the Flash

THE GIST: Ricki (real name Linda) left her husband and three young children behind in order to chase her dream of becoming a famous rock star, which didn't pan out. One day, she gets a call from her ex-husband, asking her to come back and help him deal with their daughter, who just got left by her husband. She reluctantly goes, but no one is really eager to welcome her.

Ricki and the Flash is the kind of movie that makes you go, No, this can't be good; but it's not bad at all.

Naturally, having Meryl Streep play this woman pulled in different directions doesn't hurt, but the script is well written as well, and the end product is entertaining.

Kevin Kline, Sebastian Stan, Ben Platt, Rick Springfield, Audra McDonald, and Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep's real-life daughter) round up a great cast.

THE BOTTOM LINE: A charming and at times funny dramedy that hits quite a few good notes.
