Predator

THE GIST: A special forces unit is dispatched to the jungle on a rescue mission for the CIA. Once there, they find that the hostages have not just been killed, but horribly mutilated as well. Shortly after finding the terrorists' camp, they realize they themselves are being hunted by some unknown but highly efficient predator.

Clearly intended as a vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger, Predator works pretty well as an action/horror/adventure movie because it leverages its star's tough-guy posture and his imposing physical presence.

The story is not necessarily the most original, but the creature at its core surely is. It is also well thought out and, because it's invisible most of the time, it is effective in creating a sense of foreboding of impending and inevitable doom.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Make sure you suspend your disbelief, because that's a basic requirement to enjoy a movie such as this. If you do, you will probably like it.
