Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

THE GIST: It's the mid-twenties in New York City and the local magical community is on edge because of the nefarious actions of wanted dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Newt Scamander, a British wizard expert in magical creatures, arrives for a brief layover, but when several of the creatures he secretly carries in his suitcase escape, he attracts the attention of local Auror Percival Graves.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is based on J.K. Rowling's homonymous book and she also wrote the screenplay.

Occurring a full seventy years before the events in the Harry Potter series, Beasts can hardly be considered a prequel, even though there are certainly references to elements found in the Potter-world.

Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt, flanked by Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol. Like it happened with the Potter movies, plenty of famous actors want to be part of these movies as well, so we have Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Dan Hedaya, Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, ZoĆ« Kravitz, and Johnny Depp.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Even though Beasts might not achieve the heights of fan adoration engendered by the Potter books and films, I found this movie very enjoyable.
