John Wick

THE GIST: Still grieving his wife's untimely passing, John Wick gets a delivery of a puppy she sent him before dying. Wick is a former assassin of unmatched skills and when some gangsters break into his home to steal his vintage car and end up killing the puppy he now loves, he has no choice but to unearth his arsenal and re-don his old persona to seek vengeance.

John Wick is the first installment in what has now become a new franchise headlined by Keanu Reeves. I have to say that he is perfectly cast in the role of the unwilling assassin on a vengeful quest, and fills Wick's shoes with gusto.

In smaller but key roles, we find Willem Dafoe, Alfie Allen, Michael Nyqvist, Dean Winters, Lance Reddick, and the great Ian McShane.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Steady yourself for an endless succession of fight scenes with and without weapons of countless kinds. It's an adrenaline rush as few I've seen before, but it works; the final product is quite entertaining.
