Split

THE GIST: Kevin might look like an ordinary individual, but he is afflicted by DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), which causes his mind to hosts 23 distinct personalities that fight to emerge and grab the spotlight, even if only temporarily. One of them kidnaps three teenage girls, apparently under orders from a 24th powerful and violent personality, who has yet to emerge, called The Beast. Will they be found and freed before the worst happens?

Split is the second movie in M. Night Shyamalan's original supernatural trilogy, following Unbreakable. While the latter needed me to watch it again to be fully appreciated, Split is an instant winner.

James McAvoy showcases his incredible acting talents by playing multiple roles on screen, sometimes switching between them on the spot. Truly bewildering.

Anya Taylor-Joy is a recent discovery and already a favorite of mine. Also of note Betty Buckley.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Honestly, this movie is worth watching just for the terrific acting, but it's also a good and original thriller/horror (no gore), and if you like Shyamalan's work, I think it's one of his best!

Grade: 8.5
